Mallia Palace & Kera Monastery at Lassithi Valley

The Minoan Palace of Malia situated near the town of Malia, ranks as the third-largest Minoan palace on the island. Positioned by the sea along the route joining eastern and central Crete, it presents a stunning setting for uncovering the mysteries of this ancient marvel. Historians suggest that the Palace was initially established circa 1900 BC, thereby transforming the adjacent settlement into an impressive Palace city. Although the original palace succumbed to destruction around 1700 BC, it was reconstructed on an identical site and according to the same design by 1650 BC. Unfortunately, this new Palace also faced destruction in 1450 BC, after which it remained uninhabited. Currently, visitors may observe the remnants of the Neopalatial complex, encompassing the Central Court, the North Court, and the Tower Court. The majority of the extant ruins originate from the second palace, alongside a small structure from the Mycenaean era erected within the ruins. To gain insight into life during ancient Crete, one should not overlook the opportunity to explore this remarkable Minoan Palace in Malia. Subsequently, we proceed to the Lasithi valley, positioned 850 m above sea level. Encircled by the Dikti Mountains and 18 charming villages that preserve the atmosphere of a by-gone era, our next destination will be the historical monastery of Kera Kardiotissa, which is inhabited and managed by nuns. Here, one can admire the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary, an abundance of frescoes, and a variety of other icons dating back to the 14th century.

Driving along the Northeast coast through the gorge of St George we reach the fishing village of Elounda or Plaka. Embarkation by traditional boat to the tiny island of Spinalonga. Spinalonga has had a very mysterious history and today, although uninhabited, still echoes with ghostly reminders of the past. The Venetians constructed a very impressive fortress with 40 cannons which have been guarding the bay since the 15th century. At the beginning of the 19th century human pain and sorrow was scattered around this islet. It became a leper colony, the last active leper colony in Europe, and it remained so until 1957, when it was cleared by the Health Authorities, leaving the place uninhabited. City walk & Local treat in Chania

Our tour starts with a visit to this beautiful city. Chania is the most ravishing and quaint city of Crete and ceased to be its capital after 686 years, in 1971. Throughout the whole city we can witness samples of all the civilizations that have passed from here: archaeological Minoan sites, Turkish minarets and mosques, Muslim neighborhoods, Venetian fortresses and dockyards, fountains and squares, arches and mansions, the famous Loggia and of course the landmark of the city, the renowned Lighthouse. We can enjoy optionally a lunch admiring the view of the quaint harbor (or- when renovation ends- we can visit the famous Agora, which was constructed in 1913 according to the standards of the market in Marseille).
